13-year-old still recovering after being shot at family gathering in Newport News

Newport News, Va. - A teen was shot in the back Thursday night at a family gathering, police tell NewsChannel 3.

At about 9:50 p.m. Thursday night, police responded to calls of a shooting in the 700 block of 19th Street.

Officers found a 13-year-old male Hampton teenager suffering from a single gunshot wound to his back.

Medics transported the teen to Riverside Regional Hospital with a non-life threatening wound.

Police say multiple shots were fired, and they found shell casings on the sidewalk near the intersection of 19th Street and Madison Avenue.

The teenager was attending what was described as a 'large family gathering'. Witnesses and family members interviewed have provided no information in this shooting, police say.
