Portsmouth, Va. – A man was arrested over the weekend for breaking into a pawn shop through the roof and taking cash from the business, police tell NewsChannel 3.

It happened on Sunday, April 14 at approximately 1:45 a.m. Portsmouth police were notified of an alarm sounding at Cash Money Pawn, located on Portsmouth Boulevard.

The owner of Cash Money Pawn was notified by the alarm company that someone was inside the business.

Police responded, and within minutes, found a man on the roof.

Police say the man re-entered the business through an opening in the roof. He then attempted to leave through the back door – but was quickly apprehended by the awaiting officers.

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Thyrone Lynn Scott of the 700 block of City Park Avenue in Portsmouth.

Scott was taken into custody. He was charged with burglary, destruction of property, and grand larceny. Officers recovered money on the suspect that was taken from the business. An area of the roof, near the air vent, had collapsed when the suspect entered and attempted to exit, police say.
