Virginia Beach, Va. – More than 300 associates, families and friends of Amerigroup across Hampton Roads participated in its first Company-wide Community Service Day this past weekend, volunteering more than 1,200 hours of service to help local organizations.

This will be the sixth year Amerigroup’s parent company, WellPoint, Inc., has participated in a Company-wide Community Service Day.

Volunteer efforts benefited the following eight local organizations:

• Boys & Girls Club

• Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia

• Endependence Center, Inc.—Center for Independent Living

• Horizons Hampton Roads, Inc.

• Samaritan House

• Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia

• YMCA of Pembroke

• ForKids, Inc.

“It was great to support organizations that work tirelessly to make a difference in the community,” said Tina Gill, Amerigroup Foundation executive director.

Volunteers participated in many activities, including: landscaping, hosting a youth fun and fit day, refurbishing apartments and organizing donation closets.

In addition to the Company-wide Community Service Day, more than 170 Amerigroup volunteers walked in the Hampton Roads March of Dimes’ March for Babies walk at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. The Amerigroup Foundation donated $20,000 this year, and Amerigroup employee contributions are approaching $20,000.
