Suffolk, Va. -Officer James Winslow has been honored with the ultimate sacrifice and gold medal of valor awards.
The award is given in recognition of an act involving extreme personal risk above and beyond the call of duty.
Officer Winslow tried to pull Joe Staton over in what police say was a stolen SUV.
Winslow followed and officers found him badly beaten just off Nansemond Parkway.
Staton was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.
Winslow was able to hold onto his gun during the attack.
