Newport News, Va. – A Denbigh High School student notified a security officer that another student brought a gun to school on Wednesday.

The school was placed on lockdown, according to Michelle Price with Newport News Public Schools, and the student believed to have the gun was obtained.

That student was searched, and the gun was not found in his possession.

School security officials had enough information to know that the student may have planted the gun somewhere, Price says.

Officers searched the school and found the gun ouside on the school grounds in a bush on the edge of the school property.

The student has been taken out of school and recommended for expulsion.

The gun was an inoperable airsoft pistol that resembled a real pistol.

It was inoperable because there was a piece missing that was needed in order to shoot it. It’s similar to a BB gun, but shoots plastic pellets, officials say.
