Man arrested after short pursuit in Portsmouth

A 35-year-old Chesapeake man was arrested in Portsmouth on Tuesday after leading police on a short pursuit.

Portsmouth Police say they received a 911 call from a woman saying a man was armed with a handgun in the area of 1500 LaSalle Avenue.

As officers arrived at the scene, the man entered a maroon vehicle and left the scene.

The vehicle continued to accelerate at a high rate of speed for a short while until the suspect slowed the vehicle down and exited.

The vehicle continued to travel at a slow speed into the push bumpers of the police vehicle.

Officers pursued the suspect on foot in the area of the 1300 block of Effingham and I-264.

The driver, identified as Antoine Lavar Jones, was taken into custody by officers around 4:00 p.m.

He was arrested on three outstanding felony warrants for probation violations and additional charges of felony attempt to elude police, driving on a suspended license, and reckless driving.

No injuries were reported.
