Hampton, Va. - It's been 17 years in the making and it's finally happened: The Hampton University Lady Pirates are in the NCAA Softball Tournament.

"We could have had some better ones, so you say, on paper, but you never know. That's why you play the game. We're gonna come out and play Hampton softball and hopefully become victorious," says coach Trena Peel.

The Pirates defeated the Norfolk State Spartans over the weekend to win the MEAC Championship.

They will face the number two team in the country -- the Florida Gators. It will be the first meeting between the two clubs.

"We've always been that team that has to have the chip on our shoulder, has to prove something, so I think it's just another game for us," says batting coach Margaret

"We're excited! We're like, okay, because it's nice to play good competition. It's nice and it's exciting. We're gonna have fun," says pitcher Jailynn Jackson.

The game is set for Friday at 6:00 p.m.
