James City County, Va. – A 41-year-old James City County man died after getting swept away in a current on the York River Sunday.

Police say Michael Patrick Colon was boating near Croaker Landing with his two son’s and his brother-in-law. He was wading behind the boat in water up to his chest when the current swept him away.

One of the other boaters reported him missing and the fire department started an open-water rescue.

Colon’s body was found around midnight but the current was too swift for crews to attempt a recovery at the time.

Crews used sonar to track his body which was recovered at 9 a.m. Monday morning in King and Queen County.

Officials say this drowning is an accident according to the preliminary investigation.
