Woman dies after accident on JRB

Posted

Isle of Wight County, Va. - A woman died after a crash on the James River Bridge.

Twenty-year-old Kaya Williams died at the hospital yesterday morning.

Police tell NewsChannel 3 she lost control of her SUV around 8:30 Monday night while driving over the grid deck.

Police are still investigating the crash, but say because of Monday night's rain, the speed limit on the JRB dropped from 55 to 45 miles an hour.

Witnesses told police they saw Williams going a bit over that speed limit.

Starting in March, VDOT has been conducting an internal investigation into the increase of crashes on the bridge since the new grid deck was approved in December.

VDOT told NewsChannel 3 they have not found a link between the approved grid deck and the crashes.

They are now reviewing the entire bridge to determine if there are any contributing factors.
