The Norfolk Department of Public Health is offering free Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis) booster vaccinations for rising 6th-graders during special, evening clinics at the Norfolk Public Health Center on Wednesday, August 14th and Wednesday, August 28th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Tdap booster vaccinations are required by the Commonwealth of Virginia before students can start sixth grade on September 3rd.

Last fall, Norfolk Public Schools had 764 sixth-graders who could not start school on the first day. That is about 32 percent of the total sixth-grade enrollment.

At this point in the summer, approximately 1,608 of the 2,285 rising sixth-graders have not yet been documented as having a Tdap booster.

The Norfolk Public Health Center is located at 830 Southampton Avenue, at the intersection of Brambleton and Colley avenues.

Parents should bring their children’s immunization records, as well as documentation of any insurance coverage.  For further information, please call 757-355-5666.

Additionally, the Norfolk Department of Public Health continues to offer all routine “back-to-school” immunizations at the Little Creek Public Health Center, 207 East Little Creek Road. These vaccination clinics are offered Monday through Friday, in morning and afternoon sessions.  Registration for the morning session is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and registration for the afternoon session is from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  For more information, please call 757-451-7510.
