Suspect in fatal Newport News shooting turns himself in to police

Newport News, Va. – Newport News homicide detectives have a identified a suspect in Tuesday’s fatal shooting of a man in the area of Dresden and Adams Drive.

21-year-old Christapha Enrico Herman Hayes faces charges of murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the shooting death of 21-year-old Paris Bennett.

On Friday at around 4 p.m., Hayes went to the police headquarters and surrendered. He will be placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail. 

The case is the city’s 10th homicide this year.

Just before 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday a Newport News Police Sergeant was outside of Central Precinct on Dresden Drive when he heard several gunshots coming from the area of Dresden and Adams Drive.

When officers arrived in the area, they located several shell casings; however police never received any calls in reference to gunshots.

A short time later, police were notified by an area hospital that an individual had brought Bennett to the hospital with a life threatening gunshot wound, where he later died.
