State Police are now investigating a fatal crash in Accomack County.

It happened at 10:33 a.m. Thursday, October 10.

Virginia State Police Trooper T.E. Lynch was called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Route 13 in the 21000 block of Lankford Highway.

A flatbed tractor-trailer was heading southbound on Route 13 when it ran off the right side of the highway and traveled for approximately 900 feet before striking a ditch. The impact with the ditch caused the tractor-trailer to overturn, police say.

The driver, Ernest J. Gibbons Jr., 74, of Fruitland, Md., was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Gibbons died at the scene. He was the only occupant in the vehicle, officials say.

The cause of the crash is believed to be related to a medical condition.
