UPDATE: Newport News father arrested for child abuse, mother now in custody

UPDATE: Crystal Lee Houston, 29, of the 100 block of Delmar Lane in Newport News has now been arrested. 

She was wanted for felony child neglect. 

Last week Martin Houston, the child's father, was accused of hitting the 6-year-old child with his hands. He was charged with one count of felony child abuse/neglect and was taken to Newport News City Jail. 

Police tell NewsChannel 3 that Crystal Houston was there when her husband allegedly beat the child. The boy had bruises and cuts on his face and missed three days of school.

Crystal Houston was taken into custody at around 7 p.m. on Monday in the 300 block of Hilltop Drive in an apartment. The information that was received was based on a citizen's tip.

Previous: Newport News, Va. - Newport News Police have arrested a 38-year-old man for child abuse/neglect after an investigation revealed he hit his son.

The investigation began when personnel at a Newport News elementary school realized that a six-year-old male student hadn't been to school since Tuesday and became concerned.

It was also learned that the boy may have been the victim of abuse.

The school contacted Child Protective Services and police.

The investigation revealed that 38-year-old Martin Houston had hit his son with his hands.

Court documents say there were bruises and cuts on the 6-year-old's face. Documents also say the child told police it happened Tuesday night after his sister's football practice.

Houston was arrested and charged with one count of felony child abuse/neglect and taken to the Newport News City Jail.

The victim and three other siblings are with a family friend. Police say child protective services would not let the children stay with their mother.
