Shots fired near ODU campus overnight

Norfolk, Va. – Police responded to the area of 41st Street and Killam Avenue around 1:45 a.m. Friday morning for a party.

That’s when they say they heard several shots fired.

No one was hurt. Police say those who were at the party then left the scene.

Police believe a man fired a shot in the air to break up a fight between two women.

Students received the following automated message from ODU safety officials:

ODU Safety Timely Warning

Norfolk Police are investigating a report of shots fired in the street on West 41st Street at approximately 2 a.m. Nov. 1. Initial indications are that the incident stemmed from a man trying to break up a fight between two women, none of whom are affiliated with the ODU community. No injuries have been reported. The ODU Police and Norfolk Police will continue to maintain enhanced police patrols in this area.

There is no imminent threat to the campus. However, the community is encouraged to clear the streets so police can continue their investigation and is reminded to exercise caution. Anyone with information about this is encouraged to call the Norfolk Crimeline or the ODU Detective Unit at 683-4000.
