State Police investigating fatal two-vehicle crash in Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight County, Va. - Virginia State Police responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at 11:23AM today at the intersection of Carrollton Boulevard and Sugar Hill Road in Isle of Wight County.

Virginia State Trooper S. E. Pemberton reports that a 2005 Dodge pickup truck was headed westbound on Sugar Hill Road when the accident occurred. While the pickup truck proceeded through the intersection at Route 17, the truck pulled into the path of a northbound 1197 Plymouth van.

The van was not able to avoid the pickup truck and both vehicles collided in the intersection. The impact forced the pickup truck into a utility pole.

The driver of the pickup truck, James E. Turner IV, 31, of Carrollton, Va., was treated at the scene of the accident for minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the van, Mayra Lopez-Contreras, 33, of Suffolk, Va., was taken to Bayview Hospital in Suffolk for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Her son, four year old Anthony S. Lopez, was also transported to Bayview Hospital  for treatment of minor injuries.

Two other passengers in the van were transported to Riverside Regional Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Humberto Gutierrez-Fuentevilla, 56, of Suffolk, Va., died at the hospital. Gloria Perez, 39, is still being treated at this hospital.

James E. Turner IV was charged with reckless driving. The cause of the crash is still under investigation at this time. Alcohol is not considered a factor in this case.

All lanes of Route 17 were re-opened by 5:05PM.
