3,000 pounds of Colombian coffee destroyed in Suffolk fire

Suffolk, Va. – A fire at a Suffolk coffee plant destroyed thousands of pounds of coffee Wednesday evening, officials tell NewsChannel 3.

It happened on November 13, 2013. At 9:58 p.m., Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews responded to a fire at the Massimo Zanetti Beverage plant in the 1300 block of Progress Road. The fire was reportedly in a coffee hopper at the plant.

Crews on scene reported heavy smoke inside the building; 60 employees were evacuated to the nearby Sara Lee facility until the fire was under control, officials say.

The fire was contained to the coffee hopper, and was called under control at 10:54 p.m. Those who had evacuated were permitted to return to the building.

Approximately 3,000 pounds of Colombian Coffee was destroyed in the fire. There were no injuries.
