NCDOT to conduct additional inspections of Bonner Bridge

Posted

NCDOT announced Friday that they will be conducting additional inspections of the Bonner Bridge on Friday and Saturday to make sure it is safe for traffic.

The bridge carries NC-12 over Oregon Inlet and carries vehicles from Hatteras Island to the mainland.

Recently, sonar scanning of the bridge found additional areas where sand has eroded from the support structures of the bridge.

The additional scans will allow engineers to examine the area in greater detail.

At this time, the Bonner Bridge is open and safe for travel. It is monitored regularly and NCDOT says they will close the bridge if safety becomes a concern.

If the bridge were to be closed, the NC Ferry Division would provide emergency support to move people and cars.

NCDOT will provide updated information once the scans and inspections are complete.
