An emergency closure of Dominion Boulevard in both directions near the Steel Bridge is currently going into effect.
Motorists can use Route 168 Bypass or George Washington Highway as an alternate route, according to Elizabeth Vaughn of Chesapeake Public Works.
The contractor needed to make adjustments to formwork on one of the piers. Due to the proximity of the pier to the roadway, the contractor chose to close the road to create a safety buffer. Nothing fell and there are no injuries, officials say. This is simply a preventative measure, Vaughn says.
Officials expect this closure to last for several hours, possibly affecting rush hour.
