20-year-old Newport News man shot in front of store now facing several charges

Newport News, Va. – Stephen Tolliver, a 20-year-old Newport News man, was shot on Wednesday while he was standing in front of a store police tell NewsChannel 3. After an investigation, he is facing several charges.

Emergency officials received calls about shots fired on 35th Street and Madison Avenue at around 3:40 p.m.

Officials say they found Tolliver lying on the floor of an apartment suffering from a gunshot wound to his left thigh. They say the injury was not life-threatening and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police say Tolliver and six others were standing on the corner of 35th Street and Madison when the shooting occurred.

They say two men approached the group and Tolliver pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds.

One of the two men pulled out a gun and shot Tolliver police say. Everyone left the scene.

Police say once Tolliver is released from the hospital, he is facing several charges including assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, shoot in a public place, and shoot across road or street.

Detectives are asking that the two victims involved in the shooting contact police at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
