Elizabeth City, N.C. – On Wednesday, the Coast Guard rescued three people and a dog from the Alligator River near Elizabeth City.

Officials say a 23-foot boat ran aground in the shallow waters at the mouth of the river.

At around 3:30 p.m. the Tyrell County Sheriff’s Office called the Coast Guard and told them about the boaters who were in distress.

Crews then launched a 25-foot response boat to help, but they were not able to get to the boaters because of the shallow water. Then they used an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to rescue the boaters.

After crews lifted the boaters and the dog to safety, they took them to Northeastern Regional Airport where they met up with family members.

No one was injured.
