Update: Man arrested for downtown Norfolk bank robbery

bankrobbery1UPDATE: Norfolk Police have arrested Hakeem Jean-Pierre and charged him with robbery. He was taken into custody on January 9th without incident.

He is being held in the Norfolk City Jail.

Norfolk, Va. – Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at TowneBank on East Main Street on Thursday.

The call came in at 12:13 p.m.

Police say the suspect entered the bank at 12:09 p.m. and demanded money from the teller.

The teller complied with the suspect and he left the bank on foot. Police say no weapon was displayed.

“We were just going to lunch when we saw all these cops around,” said Will Cupples.

Cupples, like hundreds of others was grabbing a bite to eat as the robbery happened. Towne Bank is right in the middle of downtown and surrounded by restaurants. The closest police station is a quarter of a mile away.

“It is pretty bold to do it in the middle of the day with all these people around,” said Cupples.
