RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — “American Idol” runner-up and singer Clay Aiken is reportedly taking steps toward starting a new career in politics.
Sources told the Washington Blade that Aiken has been meeting with political operatives in DC and is “actively considering launching” a bid for Congress in North Carolina.
If he were to run, Aiken would be vying as a Democrat for the seat currently held by second-term Republican Renee Ellmers. Ellmers may also face a primary challenge from the right. Last summer, she ruled out a run for the Senate.
Aiken, who came out several years ago, has been active on LGBT issues. He rose to fame on the second season of American Idol in 2003.
