Chesapeake, Virginia -  Firefighters responded to the 1900 block of Beechwood Road in Chesapeake after a family was alerted of a fire by smoke detectors early Wednesday morning.

The fire started around 2:40am and the family was able to make it out of the house safely.

Fire officials say the fire started in the attached garage of the home and appears to be due to malfunctioning electrical equipment.

The fire was contained to the garage but the rest of the house sustained heavy smoke damage and the family is displaced.
