Newport News, Va. - James A. Paddleford, a Newport News Police Sergeant, has been charged with assault and battery after an alleged domestic dispute on Thursday.
Officials say at around 9:20 p.m., police responded to a call about a domestic assault.
When they got there, they spoke to a 45-year-old Newport News woman who told them that she and her boyfriend, Paddleford, had been in an argument while they were at his home.
Police say the woman was pushed and her hand was slammed in the front door as she tried to leave.
Paddleford was then charged with assault and battery. He was released on his signature pending an arraignment.
He has been a Sergeant with the department since 2001 and was assigned to the North Precinct.
He is now on unpaid administrative leave.
Police say an administrative investigation will also be conducted.
