Newport News, Va. - A Newport News man has been charged with child abuse and neglect after a child was found alone, police tell NewsChannel 3.

On January, 16, 2014, police officers responded to the 500 block of Dartmoor Drive in reference to child neglect.

A neighbor told police he found the victim, a 4-year-old Newport News boy, in the hallway outside the child’s apartment at about 7:15 a.m. The neighbor could not locate the child’s parents and notified police.

The investigation notified Child Protective Services and revealed the mother of the child was at work and left the child in the care of his father, 36-year-old Leonard Alphonso Johnson, Jr. of the 500 block of Dartmoor Drive in Newport News.

Johnson left the child unattended in the home, police say.

Johnson was arrested on January 16, 2014. He is charged with abuse and neglect of a child.
