Thousands lose power in Hampton, Virginia Beach during winter storm

Posted

Power outages were widespread across Hampton Roads during this week’s winter storm.

The biggest trouble spots were in Virginia Beach and Hampton, according to Bonita Harris of Dominion Virginia Power.

In Virginia Beach, 2,400 customers lost power in the Thalia section around 3 a.m. Crews located two pieces of failed equipment, and restored power at 5:51 a.m.

In Hampton around 4 a.m., 2,200 people lost power. Homes and businesses were affected in the Town Center area.

Power was restored at 5:58 a.m.

Hundreds of customers also lost power in North Carolina.

The biggest problem started Wednesday night at 9:48 p.m. Dominion says 825 customers near Lake Gaston lost power. Dominion crews found a broken pole, which caused the outage. Power was restored for 300 of those customers by midnight. The remaining 525 were restored by 5:11 a.m.

“Overall, our system held up very well and it looks like we dodged a bullet,” Harris says.

Harris added that Dominion crews are prepared for more snow, if it comes our way.
