A VDOT contract worker died clearing snow covered roads in Northern Virginia early Thursday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

The VDOT worker “had pulled his truck off to the right shoulder. He was standing at the rear of the truck near the spreader when he was struck by another VDOT dump truck,” State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller wrote in an email. “The cause of the crash remains under investigation.” That’s according to a report from WTVR/CBS 6 in Richmond, Va.

Virginia State Police were called to the crash scene at the intersection of Belmont Ridge Rd. and Chesterton St. in Ashburn just before 6 a.m., WTVR reports.
