Suffolk, Va. – The Suffolk Police Department and Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews responded to a call regarding an explosive device in the area of the old Tidewater Community College Campus in northern Suffolk, police tell NewsChannel 3.

The call came in at 8:05 a.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2014. A contractor working at the site made the phone call; the site is located in the 7000 block of College Drive.

Fire units arrived on scene at 8:16 a.m.

Officials say the location is the site of a former military weapons depot, and explosive devices have been found in the area previously, especially after heavy rains.

The explosive device is believed to be an unexploded shell, possibly from World War II.

The Military Explosives Ordinance Disposal responded to the scene, and has assumed responsibility of the device, which was loaded onto a truck and transported to Yorktown Naval Weapons Station for disposal.

No injuries have been reported.
