The fit Facebook mom who drew both praise and controversy in October 2013 for her “What’s your excuse?” photo is now a fitness force to be reckoned with, according to Yahoo Shine.
In the controversial picture, Maria Kang was shown posing in a workout outfit with her three children (3, 2 and 8-months). However, it was not the photo that caused a firestorm, but rather the caption that read “What’s your excuse?”
Thousands of people commented on the image, some calling her a bully while others said she’s an inspiration.
Kang has now formed the “No Excuse Moms Movement,” comprising of more than 700 local groups of moms worldwide who gather for regular workouts in free, public places.
“I feel like all the backlash was worth it,” Kang told Yahoo Shine. “I feel like my original image and message sparked an international dialogue that woke people up and made them question their excuses. I’ve always stood my ground that my intention was to inspire — and I have —and it’s exciting.”
The media attention since October, be it good or bad, has given Kang a great deal of notoriety. Her Facebook page boasts over 250,000 likes now.
