Newport News school put on lockdown after shots fired nearby

Newport News, Va. – Newsome Park Elementary School in Newport News was put on lockdown Tuesday after shots were fired in the area.

Calls came in about the shots at around 3:18 p.m.

Shots were fired in the 300 block of 50th Street.

Police say they found four men who were in some type of confrontation. One person has been detained and police are talking to three others. Charges may be pending.

Police say about 10-15 rounds were fired. A house was hit in the 600 block of 49th Street a block away.

The bullet hit the siding but did not go into the house.

The school was on lockdown for six minutes. It was lifted at 3:24 p.m. Officials say the kids were not in any danger because the incident was two blocks away. They heard the shots and made the decision.
