Man’s body recovered after accidental drowning on the Eastern Shore

A 30-year-old man’s body was recovered near a fishing pier in Northampton County early Monday morning.

According to Virginia State Police, authorities were called around 1:20 a.m. regarding a possible drowning at the fishing pier, located at 2175 Morley’s Wharf Road in Wardtown, Virginia.

Witnesses said that the man, 30-year-old Troy Sental Tankard, entered the water to retrieve his car keys that had been thrown into the water earlier with his wet clothing.

After entering the water, he never resurfaced. Witnesses attempted to located him before calling emergency personnel.

Virginia State Police Search and Rescue were called in to assist in the search. Tankard’s body was recovered just before 9:00 a.m. about 20 feet from the pier.

The incident is being treated as an accidental drowning.
