49-year-old man drowns in Edenton Bay

Edenton, NC – A 49-year-old man is dead after officials say he drowned in Edenton Bay while trying to get a remote control toy boat. He was playing with his 6-year-old granddaughter at the time officials tell NewsChannel 3.

He was identified as David Earl Hassell of Oakdale Drive.

Emergency crews were called about the incident at 10:31 a.m. on Monday. They responded to the intersection of S. Granville and W. Water Street Edenton.

Officials searched for Hassell and he was found at around 12:10 p.m.

He was taken to Vidant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say this is an accidental drowning and there is no criminal investigation.
