The City of Virginia Beach will pursue state funding for light rail, according to Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne.

Layne says Mayor Will Sessoms called him with the decision this week after consulting with Virginia Beach City Council.

The Commonwealth and the City of Virginia Beach have agreed on general terms to work towards Virginia beach getting the state funding grants of $155 million to bring the light rail from its current endpoint at Newtown Road to Town Center.

That option will not include Maglev. According to the state, Maglev is an unproven technology so it will not be funded by the state.
