UPDATE: Man shot overnight in Newport News

Newport News, Va. – A man was shot overnight in Newport News, according to police.

On Friday May 2, 2014 at about 2:45 a.m., police officers responded to the 600 block of 18th Street in reference to a shooting.

Police found a 24-year-old Newport News man, on the street, suffering a single gunshot wound to his left shoulder.

The victim told police he was walking northbound on Ivy Avenue approaching 16th Street when he saw a dark colored sedan traveling eastbound on 16th Street. An unknown person in the vehicle fired at least five rounds from the backseat driver’s side window, police say.

The victim was transported by medics to a local area hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The shooting investigation is ongoing.
