Can they do it again?

The Hampton Lady Pirates are hot. We’re talking about their recent 12-game winning streak, and they show no signs of cooling off.

Their last victory of the year came against Coppin State which helped to secure them as the MEAC northern division co-champions.

Last weekend, they came to Norfolk State in the highly-anticipated Battle of the Bay series and they left with a three-game sweep over the Lady Spartans.

This was thanks to a lot of great defense like a Danielle Budden play in the first game. This play was perfectly executed hitting the relay to end game three.

Their defense was playing, their offense was on fire. They were hitting everything the Spartan pitchers were throwing including a pitch where Taylor McCoy deposited over the right field wall.

Now it is time for the MEAC conference tournament championship. This is a tournament in which the Lady Pirates are the defending champions. They want to prove they are the best team in the conference. They know it will not be an easy road.

"We just need to play our game, have solid hitting, solid defense and stay consistent," according to team captain Margaret Wilkins.

"We want to win," says Jailynn Jackson. "We are excited and driven and believe we will take MEAC again."

The Pirates started the first nine games of the year at three up and six down. We asked Coach Mike Pelegrino what has been the biggest difference from the first ten games of the year to the last.

"Sometimes they say a bad loss is a good thing and after that Howard loss, it was like a switch went off and we started playing great ball ever since."

Pirates kick off the double elimination tournament Thursday against Savannah State.

The game is set for 1:30 p.m.
