A scuba diver came very close to being swallowed by a 49-foot Bryde’s whale off the coast of South Africa recently.
The diver, Rainer Schimpf, was underwater watching the annual sardine run, where billions of sardines migrate for their reproductive season.
The whale, seemingly appeared out of nowhere, swimming full speed with its mouth open to catch as many sardines as possible.
According to Barcroft TV, the “giant mammal swerved at the last moment to avoid smacking directly into him”—but the water displaced still sent him flying.
