Newport News, Va. – A man is now behind bars after officials say he was carrying a gun on the grounds of a Newport News Elementary School.
Police received reports at 11:20 a.m. about a man who was carrying a gun near Sanford Elementary School in the 400 block of Colony Road.
The caller told dispatchers what the man looked like and what he was wearing at the time.
An officer caught up to the man, later identified as 25-year-old Antonio Dante Hopes, who was detained while another officer contacted the person who made the complaint at the school.
Officers investigated and found that he was the person who had the gun on school grounds.
He was taken into custody and then transported to the magistrate’s office. A warrant was obtained for possession of a firearm on school grounds.
Hopes is now in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.
