Norfolk, Va. - A man has died after a shooting occurred in Norfolk on Thursday evening. He was shot outside of his Park Place Apartment.

Police say this happened at 35th and Colley Avenue.

They were notified about the shooting at 5:15 p.m.

They were told he was located in the 800 block of West 35th Street. When crews arrived, they found the man who was suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"He was like a father to me, a second father figure. Him and my dad served in the military together and we did everything together pretty much," says Craig Cadore about the 58-year-old man named Tony.

He says he worked with Tony at Park Place Methodist Church.

"Something told me not to leave and I had to, and he was supposed to show up and and he was waiting on him. He was supposed to serve today," says Cadore.

Neighbors who heard gunshots rushed out to help.

"I heard three gunshots and I thought it was a firecracker because they were shooting firecrackers last night," says a neighbor. "And I called his name. He was trying to turn and look at me and he was breathing and I was trying to call 911 and they put me on hold."

"He said his birthday was coming. I said when? He said we would know it when we heard the music," says the neighbor.

There is no suspect information right now. Police are still investigating.
