Phoenix, AZ (KPHO) — Phoenix police said two teenagers hurled three small puppies and their mother over a 6-foot fence into a dog park Monday night.
Witnesses told police the boys were in a tan Honda Civic or Accord going south on 21st Avenue just south of Glendale Avenue about 10 p.m., Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said.
They said they saw the teens throw the four dogs from the moving vehicle over the fence, Martos said, adding that they had to throw the dogs quite a distance from the street.
People at the park took the three puppies from the park, leaving the injured 2- to 3-year-old mother alone, Martos said.
Two homeless people befriended the injured dog and remained with her throughout the night. The next day, they asked a citizen about the injured pet, and that person eventually called police.
Officers took the injured dog to the Arizona Humane Society for treatment of its injuries, Martos said.
One of the puppies is a 5-month-old female Chihuahua. The puppy has a fractured front right paw, among other injuries. She will need several weeks of foster care and will most likely go to a foster home with a concerned citizen who noticed the post on the city of Phoenix’s Facebook page, said Arizona Humane Society spokeswoman Bretta Nelson.
A citizens’ fundraising page was established Thursday by Justice for Abuse and Abandoned Dogs on YouCaring.com to establish a reward for information leading to the arrest of the two teens.
Anyone with information about the teens, described only as Hispanic, who initially threw the puppies and mother from the moving vehicle are asked to call Phoenix police, Martos said.
