Teens arrested in Hampton robbery, carjacking

Hampton, Va. – Hampton police have arrested six people in connection with a robbery and carjacking that happened on Monday.

It happened on August 11, 2014. At 6:27 p.m., emergency crews received a complaint in reference to a robbery in the 2500 block of Shell Road.

Police say the victim, a 70-year-old Hampton man, had left his home, and had gotten into his 2000 Chevrolet Astro van when he was approached by multiple suspects.

One of the suspects displayed a firearm and ordered the victim out of his vehicle.

The suspects removed the victim’s wallet, which contained an undisclosed amount of money. After retrieving the victim’s property, the suspects fled the scene westbound on Shell Road occupying the victim’s vehicle.

At approximately 6:49 p.m., communications received a call from a concerned citizen, saying that a group of ‘suspicious individuals’ had fled from a van in the 200 block of Raleigh Avenue. Responding police officers located the 2000 Chevrolet Astro van which had been stolen and quickly apprehended the six suspects who were seen exiting the vehicle without incident.

The victim’s vehicle was returned to him, and he did not receive any injuries as a result of this incident, police say.

The following individuals were arrested:

Taijalon Allen Smith: 18-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 600 block of Aqua Vista Drive. He has been arrested and charged with one count of Robbery, one count of Carjacking, one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony and one count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony. He is currently in the custody of the Hampton Sherriff’s’ Office.

Demetrius Elijah Estes: 18-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 700 block of 25th Street. He has been arrested for one count of Robbery, one count of Carjacking, one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony and one count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony. He is currently in the custody of the Hampton Sherriff’s Office.

Police also arrested a 15-year-old Newport News male. He was arrested and charged with one count of Use of a Firearm in
Commission of a Felony, one count of Carjacking, one count of Robbery, one count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony and one count of Possession of Firearm by a Juvenile.

15-year-old Newport News male juvenile, charged with one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, one count of Carjacking, one count of Robbery, one count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile;

17-year-old Newport News male juvenile, charged with one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, one count of Carjacking, one count of Robbery, one count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile.
