Newport News Police have arrested a 37-year-old Hampton man and charged him with first degree murder in the death of a 59-year-old man that occurred on August 23rd.

Newport News Police say they found 59-year-old Gregory Leander Sanford lying on the ground in the backyard of a home in the 1100 block of 33rd Street after a citizen informed police of a fight.

Officers tried to speak to Sanford but he was incoherent and had signs of trauma on his body.

Sanford was transported by medics to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The investigation revealed that 37-year-old Michael Henry Perry and Sanford were not known to one another and were involved in an argument that turned physical.

Police say it is unclear what the argument was over. The incident remains under investigation.
