UPDATE: North Carolina man dies after equipment falls on him in Newport News

UPDATE: Police have now released the name of the man who was killed when a piece of equipment fell on him Friday afternoon. He has been identified as 79-year-old John Parmley.

Newport News, Va. – A 79-year-old man was killed when a piece of equipment fell on him in Newport News on Friday.

Emergency officials received calls about this at 2:24 p.m. They say this happened in the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue.

Officials say two men were transporting equipment on a flatbed truck near Jefferson Avenue in the area of 12th Street when the load shifted. The two men pulled to the side to check the load and they were adjusting the cargo straps when a piece of equipment fell on one of the men.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. The family is now being notified.

Crews are now investigating.
