Approximately 2.5 miles of Holland Road will be widened to four lanes, with construction beginning in November, VDOT announced on Monday.

The $31 million contract was awarded to American Infrastructure, Inc. from Glen Allen and will widen the road from Dam Neck Road to Nimmo Parkway.

When complete, the expansion will provide an additional north-south continuous roadway in Virginia Beach.

A VDOT spokesperson says the work will start with improvements to the Dam Neck Road and Holland Road intersection.

Crews will then start constructing the two new lanes, which will be done in two stages with each section being built one at a time.

After that, they'll make improvements to the existing lanes.

VDOT says there will be times when they'll have to close one lane during the day as well as some turn lanes into neighborhoods, but drivers will still have access to all the businesses and subdivisions along the road.

The project is expected to be complete in late 2017.
