UPDATE: Driver identified after fatal tractor trailer crash near eastbound Downtown Tunnel

UPDATE: All lanes have reopened in the Downtown Tunnel after a fatal tractor trailer crash claimed the life of a 49-year-old man on Friday. 

The victim has been identified as Jeffery Dean Slape of the 2200 block of Ferndale Road in Chesapeake. He was driving the 2001 Freightliner northbound on I-464 when he took the ramp to westbound I-264 and lost control in the curve. 

The tractor trailer hit the jersey wall and overturned landing on the ramp from eastbound I-264 to Southbound I-464 causing the cab to overturn on top of the jersey wall. 

Slape died on impact. 

Norfolk, Va. – Virginia State Police were on the scene of a fatal tractor trailer accident on the I-464 north ramp to the Downtown Tunnel headed towards Portsmouth.

This happened at approximately 1:50 p.m., officials say. The tractor trailer overturned on top of the jersey wall, causing the I-264 eastbound ramp to I-464 southbound to be shut down as well.

VSP confirm that the driver of the tractor trailer was killed in the crash.

No other details have been released.
