UPDATE: The charges have been dropped against Elizabeth City Deputy Fire Chief Dale Smith.
NewsChannel 3 has learned that the charges were dropped by District Attorney Andrew Womble.
Elizabeth City, N.C. – Elizabeth City Deputy Fire Chief Dale Smith has been charged with assault, according to Sheriff Tilley.
Smith assaulted his wife on Monday and was charged with assault, Tilley says.
According to the warrant, Smith picked his wife up off of a bed, and threw her against a wall and closet in their home in the 100 block of Southport Court in Woodville.
Smith then threw her on the floor, officials say.
His wife went to the hospital Monday night and took out the warrant Tuesday morning.
Sheriff Tilley called the fire department where Smith was working, informed him of the charges and asked Smith to turn himself in.
Smith then drove to Perquimans County and turned himself in.
Smith was placed on a 48-hour hold at the Albemarle District Jail and has a bond hearing today, NewsChannel 3 has learned.
Smith, who has been with the department for 28-years, is on paid administrative leave until his charges are resolved, according to Chief Mackey.
There is a “fill-in deputy fire chief” while Smith is out, according to Chief Mackey. He says, “they are rotating the position.”
