Southampton Co., Va. - A Wakefield man accused of killing his neighbor's dog entered into a plea agreement Tuesday in court.
John Launderville plead guilty to a charge of reckless handling of a firearm. A charge of maiming or killing an animal was dropped.
Selena Wynne, the owner of the dog Launderville was accused of killing, says she didn't know about the agreement until shortly before the hearing, but was relieved by what was decided.
Though tearful as she watched the proceeding, Wynne says she now has some closure.
"It won't bring my baby back, but I think justice was served," said Wynne.
NewsChannel 3 first told you about this case a few months ago.
Wynne said Launderville, who is her neighbor, admitted to killing her 10-year-old German Sheperd-mix.
The Southampton County Sheriff's Office said Launderville has livestock and was worried about their safety.
According to Wynne, Launderville told her he didn't realize it was her dog when he shot her and offered to give Wynne a pig to make amends.
In court Tuesday, the judge said Launderville will serve five days in jail, pay a $500 fine and $500 in restitution.
He also has to complete a gun safety class.
Wynne said she's satisfied with the outcome .
"I just wanted him to learn a lesson that this is not right," Wynne said, "It's not right, you know, he took a member of my family not just a dog."
