Norfolk, Va. - A driver who may have been operating a stolen vehicle led police on a chase in Norfolk on Thursday. During the pursuit, the driver hit a pole and slammed into a parked school bus.
Students were not on the bus at the time but there were two adults onboard. One complained about minor pain and was treated at the hospital.
Police say calls came in at around 2:40 p.m. about a possible stolen vehicle at Cromwell Drive and Tidewater Drive.
Officers tried to make contact with the driver of the blue Jeep and the vehicle sped away. The driver refused to stop and hit the parked school bus in the 1500 block of Willowood Drive.
The vehicle then continued down the road and turned north on Granby. The driver lost control and hit a power pole at Sir Oliver Rd. and Granby Street.
The driver, identified as 22-year-old Jaleel Yelverton, was taken into custody. He was injured and taken to Norfolk Sentara General for non-life threatening injuries.
Charges are still pending his release from the hospital. Police say he does have an existing warrant for Malicious Wounding for an unrelated incident that occurred on October 9th. In that case, Yelverton was involved in a fight with a person he knew.
He also previously pleaded guilty to eluding police in June of 2013. He also pleaded guilty in May of 2013 for Obtaining Money or property under false pretenses and possession of a false bank note. He was sentenced to a year in jail for all three of those charges, but all of the jail time was suspended.
