UPDATE: Power is being restored as quickly as possible in all outage areas.
Dominion says, “When everyone turned on their heat around the same time, heating systems and appliances put a heavy load on the system, putting the power line at risk to trip. To reduce the likelihood of this happening, we restore power to groups of customers rather than all customers on a line.”
This makes restoration slower but but allows the system to meet the surge in demand from each block of customers and keep them on.

The first outage is located in the area of Robin Hood Road and Military Highway; 2,934 customers are reportedly without power due to downed power lines.
The second outage has been reported in the Sandbridge area. About 1,400 customers are without power there. Dominion Virginia Power officials believe the cause of this outage is due to many customers turning on their heat at the same time.
