Man faces multiple charges after apparently shooting himself in the leg

Newport News, Va. – A man who had been shot in the leg in Newport News on Monday was treated and released from the hospital, but when  he left he went straight into police custody.

Officers say he accidentally shot himself.

On Monday, January 26th at around 10:34 p.m., police received a call about a man who had been shot in the 1100 block of 37th Street. When they got there, they found 21-year-old Devon Jordan Council with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police determined after their investigation that Council shot himself.

He has been charged with reckless handling of a firearm, shooting in the roadway, discharging a firearm within city limits, carrying a concealed weapon second offense and receiving stolen property.

Officers found the weapon at the scene and they say it was stolen.
