Five people rescued from damaged sailboat off North Carolina Coast

North Carolina – Five people were rescued from a 55-foot sailboat about 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina.

Officials were notified about at 1:50 p.m. on Friday. The catamaran Rain Maker, homeported in New York, suffered a broken mast.

The crew aboard a 350-foot cargo ship about 40 miles from the distressed sailboat responded.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a C-130 Hercules airplane crew were launched at 3:30 p.m.

The crew arrived at 5 p.m. and rescued the five boaters. Officials say the boaters were taken to Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo and they arrived in good condition.
